Changing pictures of dragons in action

Classic Dragons

Sir Richard Rycroft Bt, the BDA Classic Dragon representative has been sailing Logie at Burnham for about 18 years, having acquired her from the Bowman family in the aftermath of the 1987 hurricane. Logie was built by the Nunn Brothers at Waldringfield in 1960 and has never missed a season's racing since.

Although he has never had to restore Logie, her winter maintenance has seen Dick update all her control systems, refasten many of her timbers, rebuild the cuddy and replace the deck.  For reference purposes, he has copies of Dragon class rules going back to the 1960s and a full set of drawings retrieved from the old Nunn yard where Logie was built.

Dick would be happy to advise anyone wanting to restore a classic Dragon or to make her go faster, and he hopes that owners will contact him for information and advice (based on many years of hands-on experience). You can email Dick or call him on 01621 784435

A measure of Dick's commitment to the class can be gained by his response to a survey conducted by the magazine 'Classic Boat'.  When asked to name his three favourite classes of classic boat, his answer was ' a classic Dragon, a cold-moulded Dragon, a plastic Dragon in that order'. They didn't ask what he sailed!

Don Street has written a comprehensive article on rebuilding a classic Dragon.  To read it, click here.
But be warned - there are now some definitive rules within the Dragon class concerning the restoration of classic Dragons. There is an article available by Richard Green on restoring a Dragon within the rules. It is in PDF format. To download it click here
