Cowes Classic Week Cowes, UNITED KINGDOM Since its inception in 2008, many classes have been tremendous supporters of Cowes Classics Week.  This is simply because the event provides exceptional racing on the water, coupled with a fun and varied social programme ashore.

A number of International Dragons have competed in the past, and an invitation is extended to all Dragon owners to join us again.  With a design date of 1938, both modern and classic Dragons are eligible to compete.  There are Regatta trophies available for both modern and classic fleets, including the Royal Singapore Yacht Club International Dragon Trophy for 1st overall.

This year’s event follows on from the Edinburgh Cup at Lymington and takes place immediately after the South Coasts Championships in Cowes from 19th – 21st July.

Driven by competitor demand, Cowes Classics Week is currently the fastest growing regatta in the country.  To ensure the growth of the event doesn’t impact on the quality of the Regatta, there are a number of initiatives introduced for 2014.

With the addition of a headline sponsor in Charles Stanley, who provide a personal investment service, we are able to invest heavily in promoting the event.  There will be event banners in the High Street, at the Royal London, and on Trinity Landing as usual.  You may also have seen a higher event profile in the media, particularly Classic Boat Magazine, who will also be a key sponsor again this year. This increased profile will enhance the perception of the event.

Charles Stanley sponsorship will provide the following benefits for competitors:

·         A 5th race circuit, including one comprising shoreline starts for Classic Cruisers.  This means that we are currently  planning on there being a maximum of 3 classes on any circuit.
·         Increased capacity for social events.  In particular, through sponsorship, we shall be erecting a marquee in the garden at the Royal London that will allow us to cater for 220 people at the Regatta Dinner & prize giving.  Social events at Cowes Corinthian and Royal Corinthian Yacht Clubs can also cater for more than 200 people;
·         Dedicated website and online entry system.  Bookings for all social events can also be made online.  www.cowesclassicsweek.org
·         Dedicated results service providing online daily & overall results;
·         Event TV in locations throughout the Royal London, including results, photos, weather and news;
·         Entry fees held for the 3rd year running – the Dragon entry fee is £200 which includes race management and launch service, 3 Drinks Receptions, tea & home-made cake Tuesday-Thursday;
·         Swinging mooring fees have been held at last year’s prices;
·         A three-fold increase in the value of prizes up for grabs on Harken Race Day on Thursday;
·         Valuable clothing prizes for class winners from Hudson Wight whom we welcome on board as clothing supplier;
·         A revised format for tea & prize giving, with refreshments provided by Winkworth.

The Regatta is a 4 day, 8 race series, from Tuesday 22nd to Friday 25th July.  On Monday 21st competitors can race for the Royal London Yacht Club Trinity Cup in a one-off fleet race with class prizes, included within the entry fee.  The closing date for entries is Friday 27th June (28 June to 18 July a £50 late entry fee applies).   Full details of the Regatta are available on the website.

With all this promise, can you risk not being there and joining in the fun?  If not this year, then the dates for 2015 are Monday 20th to Friday 24th July.

Dragon Classic and Vintage Championships 2014 Aldeburgh, UNITED KINGDOM

The Dragon Classic Championship will again be held under the burgee of Aldeburgh Yacht Club(AYC) from 17 to 22 August. This year, for the first time, there will also be a Vintage Championship for GRP boats built before 1990 and a trophy also for the winner of the two fleets combined.

A Notice of Race will be published as an annex to the AYC Regatta Notice of Race. However, the entry fee will be £100 to cover race entry, cranage and mooring. The BDA is grateful to both Aldeburgh Yacht Club and the Aldeburgh Boatyard for their help in achieving this level of cost. Any yacht not requiring cranage and/or mooring need only pay the entry fee for the AYC Regatta which is not yet known but expected to be around £40.

Racing will take place within the Dragon class racing in the AYC Regatta. The Classic, Vintage and Combined events will be separately scored. Competitors will also be competing in the AYC Dragon class races and the personal handicap event within that. This gives a total of four different sets of prizes to aim at for any entrant.

Aldeburgh provides racing on an estuary within an area about 11 miles long in total from Havergate Island to Barber’s Point. It is kind to older hulls and only rarely throws salt water over the crew. Racing is usually close and intriguingly different to the Windward-Leeward courses used for most championships.

The BDA, the AYC and the Aldeburgh Dragon fleet very much hope to see competitors at these events and will ensure that their needs are met as far as possible.
