Teams Set To Sail At Last In Plymouth

10 July 2008 - 0915 - After yesterday's gales the wind has now abated and this morning we have around 15-18 knots and the teams are heading out of the harbour and planning to race outside the breakwater.

This morning's departure has been hastened by the need to clear the harbour by 1015 when the harbour entrance must close for 2 hours to allow for nuclear submarine movements.

The Race Committee is hoping to run three races today and with the forecast looking good we should be in with a chance of achieving this.  Reports, results and photos to follow later.

Caption Competition

9 July 2008 - OK - just coz there's no sailing to read about doesn't mean there's nothing for you to do. We need a caption for the photo at right. Taken by Duncan Grindley it shows the illustrious Eric Williams modelling the very latest in natty head gear (the trophy for the first Solent boat at the South Coast Championship for those of you who like all the details). Clearly we need a decent captions - your ideas to E-mail Fiona Brown please!

We Have A Cream Tea Situation

9 July 2008 - Although we don't have an exciting race report for you today, you will be pleased to know that the Dragon sailors have been making the most of the day despite the lack of sailing.  They started the day with a hefty breakfast session.

Various excellent lunches have been enjoyed at venues across Devon and this afternoon Gavia Wilkinson-Cox has led an intrepid party in a cream tea extravaganza in the yacht club.

Naturally, being Dragon sailors, they managed to turn eating scones into a competitive sport and more cream, scones, jam and tea has been consumed that could possibly be considered wise.  The challenge to stack the most cream on a scone was won by Mark Hart, the neatest cream/jam/scone assembly went to Timmy Tavinor (Nicky Wilton and Gavia judged that it was the best faired scone they'd seen in years) and Gavia won the hostess with the mostest award for coming up with the idea in the first place.

Right now the crews are relaxing briefly before tackling a club supper this evening.  So no rest for the wicked here in Plymouth!

No Sailing On Day One Of Edinburgh Cup

9 July 2008 - Sadly the weather gods are not smiling on the competitors at the Edinburgh Cup in Plymouth today and with winds regularly over 30 knots and driving rain the Royal Western Yacht Club Race Committee has been forced to abandon racing for the day. The forecast for tomorrow is a little better so we hope have to have racing news for you tomorrow evening.
