Karen II is a classic Borresen Dragon constructed in 1962 of mahogany on steamed oak frames. Apart from very subtle and necessary updates (alloy spars, newer sails, new ply deck, and new bilge frame braces) she is totally original. She has her original valid measurement certificate. Karen II won the Edinburgh Cup in 1964, but since that time has led a very relaxed life cruising and some local classic yacht racing in Scotland.
She was re-homed in south Devon in 2009 where further improvements have been made in keeping with her classic pedigree.
Karen II is now ready for a new owner to re-commission her after deciding whether to re-fit the original fittings and fixtures to create a genuine and totally original 1960’s classic racer or bring Karen II up-to-date with a modern racing rig. All the original fixtures and fittings which come with Karen II have been refurbished, as the vendor was intending to keep to her original specification and dry sail her.
Karen II will be sold with two fully rigged sets of alloy spars (one by Proctor and one by Sparlight) and a spinnaker pole. All the standing rigging is stainless steel of unkown age. She has a very full sail wardrobe: 3 mainsails by North Sails; 5 genoas by North Sails and Elvestrom, and two spinnakers (one by Lohmann). The sails have been stored for a number of years and will benefit from cleaning and re-texturing. Most are in good condition, although some are best described as “fair”.
Karen II sits on a purpose built, twin axle, heavy duty trailer (box section steel). The trailer has been stood for some time and would need to be checked thoroughly for wheel bearings, brakes etc before attempting to tow fully loaded.
Also included in the sale is a small Avon inflatable (not tested), oars, paddles, mast-head wind-ex, original marine compass, anchor, fenders, lifting strop, remaining paints and varnishes etc. and a pristine copy of the limited edition “International Dragon: The Royal Class; Official 75th Anniversary Book”.
Karen II can be viewed at any time by appointment.
Boat: 1952 Cruising Dragon project
Manufacturer / Year: 1952 - based on a Clare Lallow of Cowes Dragon
Description: This project is nearing completion and is at an ideal point for the new owner to pick their colour for hull, the rigging spec. etc. She has new laid decks and is complete with spars and sails. With the possibility of IBTC’s commercial arm completing her to the new owners requirements, cost subject to owners spec.
Wood spars (unknown year), with stainless steel standing rigging (unknown year). 2 sheet winches. One mainsail by Reckmann-Schuldt (1972). New decks laid in 2013/14 of Douglas fir on 12mm epoxy ply wood with mahogany covering boards and margins. Along with the superstructure, the hull has been thoroughly checked and any remedial work carried out and is in sound condition. The interior has been redesigned for cruising and has 1 double berth, galley area along with plenty of storage.
This Dragon just needs finishing, cost would need to be discussed or you could finish her yourself but the yard knows the boat and exactly what is needed. The workmanship at the IBTC is fantastic. She will make a lovely cruising yacht. These boat details are subject to contract. £3,995 as is. Offers on the asking price may be considered.
