Burnham-On-Crouch

Burnham Dragon Fleet

The Dragon Fleet at Burnham-on-Crouch welcomes Dragon sailors (old hands and first timers) to come and sail in our waters. The Rivers Crouch and Roach form an outstanding sailing ground providing good yet protected waters. The local racing marks and courses mean there is plenty of scope for interesting beating, reaching, and spinnaker work.

You will be able to enjoy sailing with what is one of the longest established Dragon fleets in the U.K, and we are racing from Easter until the end of November. Boats are racing every Saturday and Sunday throughout the season with upto 16 on the start line.

The keen fleet racing has for many years been centred on the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club which has unrivalled facilities for supporting yacht racing and Event regattas, as well as an excellent environment for the social side of sailing; more recently the Burnham Fleet has expanded with boats from the Royal Burnham Yacht Club once again. The organisation of the Weekend keelboat racing alternates between the Royal Corinthian and Royal Burnham Yacht Clubs. All these yachting facilities are within easy reach of all those living in and around London.

During the May bank holiday weekends we race for the NADA trophy and the Karl Marx trophy. There are trophies for Saturday and Sunday Seasons Points as well as the early summer series until the end of June. The Autumn competition begins after Burnham Week in September when we race for the Carlton platter in September, and the Newts and Candlestick Trophies in October and November. Petticrows present the trophy for the best results over all the weekends in October. In 1998 we started a new initiative of 4-Race Mini Series on three or four Saturday in the Season. These are Committee Boat Starts with Windward/Leeward Courses, lasting about 45 minutes each and raced back to back. We arrive back in the Clubhouse for a late lunch and celebration!

Burnham-on-Crouch is also the home of Petticrows – who are the major Dragon builders in the world. Tim Tavinor of Petticrows (World Championship, Gold Cup and Edinburgh Cup winner) and his team are always on hand to provide the latest developments in dragon tuning, equipment and sails.  Double Olympic Gold Medallist Poul Hoj-Jensen retains links with Burnham-on-Crouch and sails with the fleet from time to time, helping to improve our speed and competitiveness.

We look forward to welcoming you to Burnham-on-Crouch and hope you will enjoy sailing with us in The Dragon Fleet. We welcome you for a short period or the whole season as crew or bring your Dragon. Come and challenge us!
