Solent Dragon Fleet
Sail the International One Design
The classic metre design of the international dragon has a timeless beauty that instantly catches the eye of sailors and non-sailors alike.
Designed over 80 years ago, the Dragon has stood the test of time and is now more widely sailed than ever before. Faster, more modern, but less elegant, keelboats, even one design classes, come and go.
The rig and controls have been progressively updated making the Dragon easy to sail but challenging to get that little bit extra boat speed from it. While most Dragons are now built in GRP using the best current methods and materials, new wooden Dragons are occasionally still produced and classic wooden boats are restored or upgraded and thereby remain fully competitive and can, and indeed do, win major events.
The modern dragon has a rig and sails that can be easily adjusted to suit the prevailing conditions. The latest innovations are progressively introduced (e.g. Dyneema runners and backstay) and there are plenty of controls to pull in search of that extra speed.
The Solent Fleet is currently 12 more or less modern Dragons. There are also a number of Classic Dragons. We race regularly throughout the season and we are always pleased to introduce prospective owners and crews to the joy of sailing these beautiful boats.
Sailing out of Cowes offers huge choice. Whilst the Dragon Fleet is not affiliated to a particular club every weekend racing is organised by the Cowes Combined Clubs Association with the five clubs in turn providing races management of the very highest quality. There are two major series within which run a number of seasonal series. The Cowes Keelboat Championship is windward/leeward course with a committee boat start mid Solent. The Solent Series is shore line starts and round-the-cans offering very typical Cowes courses packed with interest and drama. This is a fabulous schedule and we are very grateful to all the club members who provide the race management and for their hospitality after racing.
As well as this regular club sailing there are a number of regattas throughout the year in which the Dragon fleet can compete. In 2017 we hosted the Southern Area Championship and the Edinburgh Cup. This year the Edinburgh Cup will be in Torbay but Cowes clubs are still hosting the Southern Area Championship, Classic Week and , of course Cowes Week.
